The Problem

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could take charge of our lives the way we manage Agile digital transformation projects. We sure could use a does of Agile so we could handle the world worlding in these uniquely risky and uncertain times.

If we tried a bit of Agile, faced with risks, we could define probability of occurrence and severity of impact. Once known, we’d manage the risk in one or more ways. We do this when buying health insurance, hoping to transfer the cost of care to the carrier. If you’ve required any health care lately, you know it’s just not that easy.

In fact, with uncertainty, it’s dreadful. With uncertainty we don’t know the probability of occurrence and/or the impact  of the adverse event.

Unlike Agile, we don’t assemble a Scrum team, who breaks down our lives into prioritized short-intervals, conducts planning sessions, and evaluates each iteration for risks and uncertainties. So we suffer, if it’s not possible for us to spot risks and uncertainties that befall us and we can’t predict how to accommodate them.

The Solution

So what do we do? My first thought was my son. He’s a chef and works in an industry fraught with risk and uncertainty, yet he’s found the secret sauce. The kitchen staff, or back of the house, is in a state of siege on a good night. Yet, when something goes wrong, the members of the kitchen staff have each other’s back. It’s your team, whether they’re coworkers, friends, families and so on, with diverse perspectives, that help us through, or even thrive, in risky and uncertain times. We can’t go it alone, so nurture your team. Connectedness is our best option in these risky and uncertain times.
