How About Caring for Another Person?

The Problem

You’re a resister when you fail to do what we’ve all agreed upon previously. Often, the first reaction is that everyone loses because of you. Your action or inaction could cause project failure.

The Solution

What would happen if we paused each time we encountered a resister and treated them as a victim instead of an offender? To be clear, I’m not talking about endorsing a resister’s behavior. I’m suggesting empathy; that profound form of communion with another person where we find a heartfelt path between ourselves and someone else, understanding why they resisted. Frequently, this illuminates all kinds of insights, like addressing ability and behavioral needs of the resister, improving what was originally agreed upon so other resisters embrace it, making the change more sustainable, and so on.
