The Problem
You set an expectation with someone you work with, a friend, or even a family member. You both agreed that they would complete a task by a specific date. That date came and went, but you never received the completed product. You confront the person, who failed to deliver and they say, “I had all these other tasks to complete and I ran out of time.”
The Solution
It’s a matter of priorities. Oddly, we all have the same amount of time, 24 hours in each day. How is it that some of us run out of time and fail to do what’s expected of us, while others don’t? Whenever someone fails to deliver on a scheduled commitment, they just told me that I’m clearly not important. Someone or something else was a greater priority.
So, when there’s a missed deadline, stop and ask those responsible, “What are their priorities? Who sets those priorities? “Where does my work fit in those priorities? You can’t agree to setting a realistic delivery date for a work product until you make priorities clear.
