The Problem
Working virtually, especially from home is a perilously difficult balancing game. There’s no limit to the 24X7 constant barrage of employer and client expectations, while the rest of your life takes a back seat. Everyone thinks you’re available because you’re online. Likewise, everything everyone expects from you is a gotta have it, gotta have it now!
For example, when asked to do one more task before you typically end your day, you say you have another appointment. The client making the request, responds, it will only take a few minutes. You’re trapped in a struggle and end up working and arriving late and stressed for your appointment.
The Solution
Never give reasons for your unavailability. You simply say, I’m not available. If you offer a reason for your unavailability, they’ll respond with a better reason for why you must be at their disposal. Now, that said, there’s a lot you need to do in advance when setting expectations about your boundaries. For example, you state you are available starting each weekday at 9:00 and ending at 5:00. While you may choose to work nights, weekends, holidays, and so on, that’s your choice and not an invitation stating you’re available. Setting and maintaining your boundaries is one of the most important ways to establish a fulfilling life. This is how successful people pursue their passion, have a great marriage, raise children who don’t hate them, etc.
